World Fest - Okaida Afroso

Born into a family of musicians and storytellers on the west coast of Ghana, Okaidja Afroso is a singer, guitarist, percussionist, and dancer deeply connected to the musical traditions of the African Diaspora. As a young boy, Okaidja sang while he worked on fishing boats. The fishermen would sing as they worked, and Okaidja passed the long days learning the songs of the great sea. Through his distinctive style that combines various percussion instruments, vocals, guitar, and dance, Afroso explores the perseverance of ancestral traditions and creates a new, contemporary African oral tradition. Okaidja Afroso's visit to Oskaloosa is made possible by a partnership between Arts Midwest, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Iowa Arts Council, and the George Daily Auditorium.

What do studio musicians contribute to hits? More than you think! Guitarist Jimmy Ryan has been behind the scenes with some of the biggest names in music, including Carly Simon, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Cat Stevens, John Prine, and Elton John. In his "Musical TED Talk," Jimmy will use guitar, multimedia, and entertaining stories to show you how studio musicians take raw, unfinished songs and turn them into the hits the world has come to love! This entertaining night is perfect for music lovers and those wanting to know more about getting into the 'biz.'

Jimmy Ryan is a 2023 Iowa Rock & Roll Association Hall of Fame Inductee and Lifetime Achievement recipient.

World Fest Jordan: Farah Siraj

The capstone concert celebrating a week of free gatherings, workshops, and performances with Farah Siraj from Jordan.

Farah's music fuses influences of Arabic music, flamenco, jazz, bossa, and pop, with lyrics in Arabic, Spanish, and English. Named Jordan's Musical Ambassadress and "the Norah Jones of the Middle East," Farah has performed at some of the world's most prestigious platforms, including the United Nations, The John F. Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Lincoln Center in New York, MTV, and Coke Studio.

As a humanitarian, Farah focuses on raising awareness about the consequences of war and violence, and advocates for women's rights, refugee rights, and animal rights. Farah approaches music as a medium for peace and a way to amplify the voices of people around the world who need to be heard.

Forever Young

A perfect blend of theatrical storytelling and arena tour excitement, the full-length musical Forever Young brings a heartfelt true story to life using a playlist for the ages. With hits from The Beatles, Bon Jovi, Michael Jackson, Frankie Valley and the Four Seasons, Rascal Flatts, Brooks & Dunn, and Queen, to name a few, this show was a favorite in Branson. It's got everything, and by "everything," we mean powerhouse vocals, dynamite choreography, and five guys in a suburban basement. Packed full of pop, rock, and country classics, Forever Young is ultimately a tribute to your life...and your music!

The Pa'Akai We Bring
Tuesday, April 2, 2024 • 7 PM

This original production, performed by the Honolulu Theatre for Youth, introduces audiences to the Native Hawaiian relationship to pa'akai (salt). Traditionally, pa'akai is food, medicine, a sacrament, and a treasured gift. The play follows multiple generations of salt farmers on Kaua'i, mixing ancient stories, hula, live music, original songs, and plenty of audience participation into a tasty potluck performance joyously served with aloha.
