The Black Box

Did you know that the Black Box is the same size as the Mainstage? The Board Room, Black Box, and Mainstage were designed with the same dimensions so multiple shows could rehearse at the same time.

Located directly east of the stage, the Black Box serves a variety of needs, including breakout rehearsal space, set-building space, and classroom space. The Auditorium is used almost 800 times per year, and almost half of those uses are in the Black Box.

The splash of color that makes our Black Box unique is a spectacular painted backdrop created for the 2014 production of Iola Powell Cadwallader’s Georgiana. It was designed by professional visual artist, Mike Brangoccio, painted by community members, and now hangs safely along the back of the Black Box. It reminds us of our commitment to partnership and collaboration.

The Black Box sometimes gets gussied up for public use, too. A few years ago, the Auditorium was a host site for a statewide conference, and all 80 attendees ate lunch in the Black Box. A high school production team meeting, the United Way’s summer lunch program, community crew members chatting with professional touring groups – you never know what you’ll find in the Black Box!
